The Portrait begins with a planning/sketching session of approximately one and a half to two hours. A dozen or more graphite compositional sketches will be created. For out of town or out of state commissions, additional photographs of clothing, furniture, or background details will be shot.  Sketches will be adjusted and completed off site.  Together we will choose the final pose from four to six compositions presented.

The color work will begin in the studio after I prepare the marble coated pastel board, watercolor paper, or Belgian linen canvas. The under painting and first layers of color are begun in the studio. The process is a slow, gradual buildup of color and refinement of detail. Additional sittings or meetings will then be scheduled to complete the final color work.

Head and shoulder portraits may be completed over a period of two to three weeks. However, compositions with full length poses or with multiple people may require additional sittings. These more complex paintings may take two to six months to complete due to drying time for the oils and complexity of design.

Created with the finest archival materials, the finished portrait will last for generations to come.
